The Westwood Lady Panthers used a big first half over Palestine to stay in the district playoff race with a 52-33 win Friday night at the Palestine Gymnasium.
“This was an almost must-win for our team,” Westwood head coach Brandi Daily said. “I am proud of the way these girls have played to put themselves in a position to make the playoffs.”
At the end of the first round of District 20-3A play, Westwood is tied with Athens and Crockett for third place at 2-3.
Palestine finished the first half of district winless at 0-5.
Westwood’s Sierra Henry led the scoring with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Jessica Blair scored 14 points, 12 coming in the first half when the Lady Panthers made the big run to take a commanding lead.
Dana Whitehead led Palestine with 10 points and Jazmine Hicks, the former Westwood player, had nine points.
After a slow start with each team managing only two baskets in the first seven minutes, Westwood went on a 17-0 run for the next six minutes.
“We played with a lot of energy, helped each other out and made good passes,” Daily said. “When we does those kind of things, we are going to have success.”
Westwood scored 11 straight points in the final two minutes of the first quarter starting with Marialle Boles’ basket. Blair had back-to-back baskets and the Lady Panthers led 15-4 at the end of the quarter.
The second quarter started just like the end of the first. Westwood scored the first six points of the quarter and after Henry’s layup, the Lady Panthers led 21-4.
Palestine went nearly seven minutes without scoring a point until Whitehead hit a jumper to end Westwood’s 17-0 run. But Westwood’s Emily Mackie hit a pair of jumpers and Westwood led comfortably 31-10 at halfitme.
Palestine used an 8-2 run in the start of the third quarter to cut the lead to 33-18, but it was the closest the Ladycats would get to Westwood.
