Palestine ISD campuses host Veterans Day programs
PALESTINE — Community and staff,
It is hard to fathom how close we are to the holidays. Just yesterday, or so it seems, we began the school year. Time flies when you are having fun, and that is exactly what we are doing in PISD, having a good time celebrating all the good things happening.
First, our third grade gifted and talented students have become archeologist thanks to the new math and science curriculum. Students are gaining a more advanced vocabulary in both subjects and there is an archeological team that has a big dig and expedition planned soon. Way to go third graders! Students in our fourth and fifth grade have just completed their six weeks exams and we are proud of what the Story Lions are accomplishing this year. The Lions of Story Elementary are roaring louder than ever.
If we really wanted our new archeologists at Story to travel to an exotic place to explore, we should send them to Wildcat Stadium next week. There is no telling what they would find. Monday, construction workers will be using earth movers, bull dozers, and other equipment as they begin the renovations to the football field and track. We are excited about what is about to take place in our district in regard to the construction projects. Yes, and we are just as excited about the low construction costs today. If you would like to visit our web site to view architectural renderings of the construction projects in PISD go to www.palestineschools.org.
Discovery and the art of uncovering new knowledge is what we do in education, and the district wishes to thank all those who took the time to fill out our parent surveys expressing their views and giving us suggestions on how to become a better school district. One way PISD will always strive to improve is in the area of teaching our children to be well-rounded.
This week PISD did just that. In reverence of Veteran’s Day each of our campuses hosted a program honoring the men and women who have fought, died, bled, and traveled abroad to defend our great Nation. To those veterans who participated in our programs, “thank you” for taking time out of your day to teach our children about patriotism, but most of all thank you for your service to this country. May God always bless the United States! As this week comes to a close, remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
Thank A Vet
by William A Predeau
Many people travel to our shores
To escape their world of strife
and leave their troubled lands behind
To enjoy our way of life
But our way of life in America
Didn’t come easy, so don’t forget
If you love what we enjoy today
Be sure and thank a Vet
They shed there blood on foreign shores
to help keep others free
and many never came back home
to their wives and family
Many Fathers, Sons and daughters
Still battle in distant sand
May they never be forgotten
Nor the fight they have at hand
The bells will toll in their honor
As long as we never forget
America is what it is today
Thank God, and thank a Vet
Thank you for all you do supporting this district and always remember what is important in life.

College Kudos 401 column: Final course load in final semester at UT Austin
It's become a tradition in this column, so I've got to keep it going. As you know though, I'm in my final semester as an undergraduate, so this will be the last ever class rundown column from me as a journalism major at the University of Texas.

“The Book of Eli:” Questioning the Apocalypse
“The Book of Eli,” Denzel Washington's new vehicle, provides a novel look at a post-apocalyptic world (which begs the question: if the Apocalypse is the end of the world, then how come the world still exists and people still populate it?). End of the world cinema is almost a film genre in itself.

The danger of showing favoritism
I was asked to speak to a group of mothers recently. I spoke on the topics of building our children's self-esteem and sibling rivalry. I talked for 30 minutes or so, reminding them that children, and especially teenagers, will make better choices when they feel better about themselves. It's scary when a young person doesn't feel his life has meaning or value. The choices he can make are devastating. From how well they perform in school to moral choices they make on the weekends, it is terribly important that they realize how loved and valued they are.
