Cub Scout Pack
collecting old flags
Cub Scout Pack 705 would like to offer a free service to the public. The pack would like to collect damaged, old flags that need to be retired. This way the flags can be retired in a ceremony appropriate to its service to our country.
“It would also be helpful as the boys need to learn proper handling of a flag retirement ceremony,” Jim Arceneaux of Pack 705 said.
The pack also is operating a uniform bank to assist scouts who would like to join the scouting program, but can’t afford to uniform correctly.
For information, call Jim Arceneaux at 903-729-6833.

It's become a tradition in this column, so I've got to keep it going. As you know though, I'm in my final semester as an undergraduate, so this will be the last ever class rundown column from me as a journalism major at the University of Texas.

“The Book of Eli:” Questioning the Apocalypse
“The Book of Eli,” Denzel Washington's new vehicle, provides a novel look at a post-apocalyptic world (which begs the question: if the Apocalypse is the end of the world, then how come the world still exists and people still populate it?). End of the world cinema is almost a film genre in itself.

The danger of showing favoritism
I was asked to speak to a group of mothers recently. I spoke on the topics of building our children's self-esteem and sibling rivalry. I talked for 30 minutes or so, reminding them that children, and especially teenagers, will make better choices when they feel better about themselves. It's scary when a young person doesn't feel his life has meaning or value. The choices he can make are devastating. From how well they perform in school to moral choices they make on the weekends, it is terribly important that they realize how loved and valued they are.
