I’m a TV addict. You won’t find any denials from me about it, I know it’s true, and everybody around me does, too. I’m a bit OCD about it as well, meaning I fret if the DVR didn’t record a show I wanted it to or if I find myself woefully behind and not caught up. I’m a completionist as well, which means once I get hooked on a show, I feel like I have to stick it out to the end, even if the show suffers a significant drop in quality (I’m looking at you, The Office).
I also won’t hesitate to recommend shows that you should watch or talk at length about my favorites, so I thought I’d dish a little bit of that wisdom this week. This is a list of all the shows I watch currently and strongly encourage you view as well.
• True Blood (HBO) – This is the vampire series for folks who still want the dark, seductive feel of the Twilight saga, but also aren’t a 14-year-old girl. It’s bloody, it’s sexy, it’s pretty trashy, but it’s also a blast.
• The Walking Dead (AMC) – Based on the graphic novels by Robert Kirkman, TWD follows a group of survivors trying to survive a zombie apocalypse. It’s a story that’s been done before, but never on television, and never this good.
• Mad Men (AMC) – The four-time Emmy winner for Best Drama, Matthew Weiner’s take on advertising in the 60s is dark, profound, heartbreaking, and wonderful, all at the same time.
• Girls (HBO) – I just got into this one, and it’s out of the Judd Apatow (Superbad, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Bridesmaids) camp. If you want to see just how awkward it is for post-college females in NYC, this is one to watch.
• Tosh.0 (Comedy Central) – It’s juvenile and gets old sometimes, but Daniel Tosh’s lambasting of stupid people on YouTube is at times a goldmine of idiots and great jokes. Plus, a video my roommate and I submitted actually aired on the show one time, so I’ve gotta stick with it.
• Workaholics (Comedy Central) – Quite possibly the funniest show on TV, this one follows three slackers working at dead-end office jobs and partying the rest of the time. It’s hard to explain, but it’ll have you rolling.
• Modern Family (ABC) – The best traditional family values sitcom on the tube, anchored by hilarious performances from Ty Burrell and a host of great actors.
• South Park (Comedy Central) – It’s a classic, and it’s still as offensive as ever, but Trey Parker and Matt Stone have not lost a step.
• Community (NBC) – The “experimental sitcom,” if such a genre exists, this one explores a host of issues outside of the norm, and anything is up for parodying, including clip shows and Law & Order. They only got a half season renewal for next season, but that’s a shame, because is one low rated show that needs to be recognized for its sheer brilliance.
• Parks and Recreation (NBC) – The spinoff of The Office that is a million times better, it gives life and heart to the small town of Pawnee, Indiana. It does sentimentality well, it does humor well, and if you don’t know about Ron Swanson, watch the show and prepare to bow down to the master of dry, anti-government ideals.
• The Office (NBC) – You know what I said about being a completionist? This is why. The last season was woefully inconsistent, and I don’t have high hopes for the new oen, even though it got picked up for a full year. But, it used to have Michael Scott, and it used to be hilarious, so maybe they’ll get their act together for one final hurrah.
• 30 Rock (NBC) – Tina Fey. Need I say more?
• American Horror Story (FX) – Welcome to the land of the weird. Ryan Murphy created this. He also created Glee, but unlike that show, AHS is actually awesome.
• Louie (FX) – Louis CK shows you how to be the most sad sack of all sad sacks.
• It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (FX) – My roommate and girlfriend hate this one because they say there’s too much yelling, but it’s hilarious, so there’s a tradeoff, ya know?
I’m sure I forgot one or two, but these are the majority of my addiction. Take a gander at these, and don’t hate me if you can’t stand it. I’m also open to suggestions for new stuff to watch, even though it’ll just add to my problems. Happy viewing.

At the Movies: '42' well told and worth telling
By now everyone has heard of Jackie Robinson, the first African American to play major league baseball. He is in all the history textbooks, along with a host of other “firsts,” which is, after all, history-making. But Brian Helgeland’s “42” does a fantastic job of humanizing the story of Jackie Robinson.
