Pet Talk: “Be My Furry Valentine” adoption event set Saturday

PALESTINE — BARC, The Humane Society invites you to find the love of your life this Valentine’s Day weekend at PetSense. There is no better place to look for love. Your furry Valentine will provide you with a companion, one that will love you unconditionally and help keep you healthy.

In fact, a growing body of published scientific research shows that having an animal companion — cats and dogs in particular — improves both our emotional and physical well-being. These studies have connected pet ownership with favorable health effects ranging from lower blood pressure to reduced anxiety levels. People who live alone find that having pets reduces feelings of loneliness. According to researchers, not only does a pet provide companionship, it also becomes a topic for conservation with other people, increasing social interactions. Pets make us love, laugh, comfort us, keep us healthy and stress free. Pets make us better people. Isn’t it time you thought about adopting a loved one?

BARC, The Humane Society pet adoptions will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at PetSense in the Palestine Plaza. The adoption fee will be $50 which includes a coupon for $20 off your pet’s spay/neuter and a $5 rabies certificate. The love you will receive in return...well that’s priceless.

February is National Pet Dental Health Month. Several veterinary groups joined together to educate pet owners of the importance of regular dental care. Actually, every month should be dental health month.  An early planned dental care program for your cat could save one of its nine lives.

Dental disease is the largest single cause of health problems in cats. As a matter of fact, 85 percent of animals have periodontal disease. Cats often suffer from resorption lesions, which is a very painful condition caused by the crown being completely resorbed and the retained root covered by gingiva. Your furry friend may show evidence of pain by not eating, weight loss, not playing with toys, sleeping more or not wanting to drink cold water.

Left untreated, dental diseases let harmful bacteria from the oral cavity spread throughout the bloodstream and this can infect major organs like the kidney, liver and heart. Starting a regular dental care routine for your cat is one of the most important things you can do to ensure overall health for your cat.

If you understand the importance of a regular dental care routine for your cat, then start by following these steps: Veterinary dental exam (clean teeth, dental X-rays, chart any problems, polish) and a home dental care plan (brush teeth, dental treats and dental rinses).
