Mildred Bess, 94, passed away on Jan. 31, 2013, at Odyssey Hospice in Corpus Christi.
She was born Oct. 23, 1918, in Houston, Texas to William and Ruby King. At age 9 the family moved to Blessing, Texas, where her father was a pharmacist.
She married Milton Bess in 1936. They followed the oil fields until 1940, when they worked as welders in the Houston Ship Yard for the war effort. Following World War II they went back to the oil fields, eventually settling down in Corpus to raise a family.
She was very active in the community, serving for 10 years as a Girl Scout leader, president of several PTA’s and president of the Coastal Education Secretary’s Association. She worked for Corpus Christi Independent School District for 17 years in the accounting department. She was a member of the Revelaires and Carousel Dance Clubs, serving as president of both and a longtime member of St. Luke’s Methodist Church.
She was proceeded in death by her husband in 2008; a daughter, Judith Thompson; a son, James Bess; and a grandson, Stephen Bess.
She is survived by a son, Robert Bess and wife Brenda of Palestine; a granddaughter, Cynthia Westley of Palestine; grandchildren, Aimee Moore and husband Justin, Cody Land, Sierra and Brianna Westley; and two great-great-grandchildren, Gavin and Oliver Moore.
She donated her body to the University of Texas Health Science Center for medical training and research.
