Bruce K. Meador

PALESTINE — Funeral services for Bruce Meador, 87, of Athens, formerly of Cayuga, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Athens with Bob Reid officiating. Burial will follow at Judson Cemetery in Cayuga.

Mr. Meador died Wednesday in Athens.

He was born Sept. 7, 1925 in Athens to Tom Wilson Meador and Margaret Goodgame Meador. 

Mr. Meador joined the U.S. Army in August of 1944 and was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the Victory Ribbon, the Army Occupation Ribbon (ribbon) and two Overseas Service Bars. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant. He was a drilling and production superintendent for Getty Oil of Venice, La.  

He loved the outdoors, gardening and was an animal lover. He enjoyed feeding the squirrels outside his home. He was an avid hunter and a collector of guns. He was a kind man and will be missed by all he knew.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Zandra Meador; and brothers and sisters, Clarence Meador, Thomas Meador Jr., Mary Meador Heywood, Annie Zell Meador McMahon and James Kenneth Meador.

Mr. Meador is survived by two daughters, Gretchen and husband John Byerts of Houston, and Mary and husband Gayle Smith of Richland, Miss.; one granddaughter, Kathryn Byerts; and a special friend, Natalie Jones of Cayuga.    

Pallbearers will be Greg Washington, Tavaris Williams, Mark Meador, Gayle Smith, Alvin “Butch” Boyd and Hodge Boyd.

Honorary pallbearers will be Judge Hudson Sr., Judge Hudson Jr. and John Byerts.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home of Athens.
