• Cayuga AD search: Webb thanks Jenkins for service

  Less than 24 hours after it was confirmed that Cayuga athletic director Greg Jenkins would be leaving his alma mater for a new position in Tenaha, CISD superintendent Dr. Rick Webb wasn’t ready to put a hard timeline on when the school would fill the now-vacant position.
  While stating that he’d like to have someone in place before the end of the current school year, Webb mostly focused on thanking Jenkins and his family for everything they have done for the Cayuga community.

• H.S. Softball: Slocum tops short-handed Grapeland, clinches district title

  In their first meeting this season, the Slocum softball team edged rival Grapeland, 1-0.
  The second time around — and with Grapeland playing short-handed — it wasn’t nearly as close.
  Thanks to sloppy defensive play from the Sandiettes and strong pitching from senior Doodle Selman, the Lady Mustangs topped Grapeland, 8-1. With the win, Slocum also clinches the District 20-A championship.

• Cayuga AD Jenkins leaving for Tenaha

  After nine years and two state championships, Greg Jenkins is saying goodbye to the Cayuga Independent School District.
  On Monday, the Tenaha school board approved Tenaha ISD’s hire of Jenkins onto their athletic staff. He will join the Tigers in an assistant’s role with both the varsity football program, as well as the basketball program.

• H.S. Track & Field: Neches, Oakwood sending big groups to area meet

  A large contingent from Neches will compete at the area track meet in Cushing Wednesday, after advancing out of the District 21-A meet last week.
  Haley Harroff will compete in three events Wednesday after winning three golds at the district meet. Harroff won both the 3,200 and 1,600 meters and, along with Emily Harrod, Kyriah Starling and Macy Morton, ran on the 800-meter relay team that also took first.

• H.S. Baseball: Elks avenge earlier loss, rout Groveton

  Earlier this season, Groveton handed the 10th-ranked Elkhart baseball team a surprising loss.
  That wasn’t happening again Friday.
  Elkhart plated five runs in the second inning, and Howard College-commit Jordan White was solid on the mound in six innings of work as the Elks beat the Indians, 11-1, in six innings Friday at The Backyard.

• H.S. Softball: Strong defense leads Elkhart past Groveton, keeps playoff hopes alive

  For six innings, the defense of the Elkhart softball team kept them in and then ahead of visiting Groveton.
  In the seventh, that same defense almost let the Lady Elks down, before it didn’t.
  Elkhart scored twice in the third inning and held on from there, avenging a heartbreaking loss from earlier in the season and keeping playoff hopes alive with a 2-1 win over the visiting Indians.

• H.S. Track & Field: Large local contingent qualifies for area meets

  For the third-straight year, the Palestine boys’ track team won a district title Thursday.
  The Wildcats brought home 10 gold medals from the 19-3A meet in Fairfield, led by two each for Jadarrius Beasley, Ivory Brown, Jonnie Dean, Mason Munoz, Jose Romero and Chris Weaver

• Local Roundup: Herod pitches PHS past Fairfield, into tie for 2nd

  The Palestine baseball team has put itself in prime position to snag one of District 19-3A’s three playoff spots.
  Behind a gem from starting pitcher Chico Herod, the Wildcats topped Fairfield Tuesday, 6-2. In the process, Palestine moved two games clear of the Eagles in the chase for the district’s final playoff spot.

• H.S. Soccer: Palestine boys, girls nab numerous all-district honors

  After sharing the district title with Nacogdoches, the Palestine boys’ soccer team snagged three of District 35-4A’s superlative awards on the all-district teams released this week.

• H.S. Basesball: Wallace continues hot streak, leads Cayuga past Cross Roads

  Despite the final score in Friday’s 18-8 win over Trinidad, Cayuga players and coaches weren’t completely pleased with how the team played.
  Tuesday, the Wildcats got things turned around in a big way.
  Cayuga had 16 hits — five more than in Friday’s game — and rolled to an easy, 12-2 victory over visiting Cross Roads.
