H.S. Baseball: Late-inning heroics send Palestine back to postseason
Being brothers, it’s only natural that Angel and Juan Trejo have been through a lot together on the baseball field.
Nothing, however, may compare to what the duo managed to do Tuesday night.
With Palestine’s game against Mexia tied 7-7 and two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Juan lined a ball to left field, scoring brother Angel from third. -
H.S. Track & Field: 1A, 2A athletes get one meet away from state
Twenty-two local athletes will represent their schools at the Class 2A, Region III track meet Friday and Saturday in Whitehouse, thanks to their performances Friday in the area meet in Crockett.
Frankston’s Ben Harmon headlined local performances at the meet, qualifying for regionals in four events. -
H.S. Baseball/Softball: Cayuga wins, sets up matchup to decide title
Needing a victory Friday to set-up a de facto district title game this week, the Cayuga baseball team turned to its most-trusted performer.
And Chantz Holland performed.
The Vernon College-commit threw the Wildcats second-straight no-hitter, as Cayuga topped Martin’s Mill 14-0 Friday. -
H.S. Softball: Cayuga wraps up district title, perfect district record
Cayuga senior Reann Richards knows winning.
After all, Richards was part of Cayuga volleyball teams that made trips to the state tournaments. So, yeah, Richards knows winning.
Except on the softball field. Until this year.
Cayuga scored eight runs in the fourth inning, sewing up a perfect district record in a 16-6 rout of visiting Cross Roads Friday. -
H.S. Track & Field: 18 Palestine athletes headed to regionals
Heading into the District 19/20-3A area meet Wednesday at Palestine High School’s Wildcat Stadium, the Palestine boys’ track team hadn’t lost a track meet all season.
That didn’t change Wednesday, either.
Behind all four relays qualifying for regionals and a distance sweep from Tyler Barnard, the Wildcats topped the area meet with 148 total points. -
H.S. Baseball: Late rally not enough as Palestine falls to Rusk
With a chance to move within a half-game of district-leading Rusk Tuesday, the Palestine baseball team saw its late-inning rally fall short.
In the process, the Wildcats not only fell to 2.5 games behind district-leading Rusk, but saw rival Fairfield climb to within a game of them for District 19-3A’s final playoff spot. -
H.S. Golf: Grapeland punches return ticket to state tournament
For the fourth-straight year, the Grapeland girls’ golf team is headed to state.
Behind medalist performances from Shelby Frauenberger and Jayde Westbrook, and solid scores up-and-down the lineup, the Sandiettes won the Class 1A, Region IV title Tuesday at the Brenham Country Club. -
Cayuga AD search: Webb thanks Jenkins for service
Less than 24 hours after it was confirmed that Cayuga athletic director Greg Jenkins would be leaving his alma mater for a new position in Tenaha, CISD superintendent Dr. Rick Webb wasn’t ready to put a hard timeline on when the school would fill the now-vacant position.
While stating that he’d like to have someone in place before the end of the current school year, Webb mostly focused on thanking Jenkins and his family for everything they have done for the Cayuga community. -
H.S. Softball: Slocum tops short-handed Grapeland, clinches district title
In their first meeting this season, the Slocum softball team edged rival Grapeland, 1-0.
The second time around — and with Grapeland playing short-handed — it wasn’t nearly as close.
Thanks to sloppy defensive play from the Sandiettes and strong pitching from senior Doodle Selman, the Lady Mustangs topped Grapeland, 8-1. With the win, Slocum also clinches the District 20-A championship. -
Cayuga AD Jenkins leaving for Tenaha
After nine years and two state championships, Greg Jenkins is saying goodbye to the Cayuga Independent School District.
On Monday, the Tenaha school board approved Tenaha ISD’s hire of Jenkins onto their athletic staff. He will join the Tigers in an assistant’s role with both the varsity football program, as well as the basketball program. - More Local Sports Headlines
