After a stellar senior season — one in which ended with his team in the state tournament — Elkhart’s Cam Reeves can add another accomplishment to his already crowded resume: All-state player.
Reeves earned one of three first team all-state outfield spots from the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association (THSBCA), on its teams released this week.
In his senior campaign, Reeves batted .457 for the Elks, with 38 RBI, 15 doubles and five triples. He also stole 35 bases.
While he was selected to the outfield by the THSBCA, Reeves biggest contribution for the Elks came on the mound. He finished the year 13-0 with a minuscule 0.89 ERA, striking out 134 batters while walking only 49.
Opposing batters hit only .139 off of Reeves in his 94 innings pitched.
Two of his teammates also were recognized by the THSBCA with second team selections.
Shortstop Jacob Cheatham, who led Elkhart in batting (.458), on-base percentage (.565) and steals (44) was named a second team shortstop.
Power-hitting catcher Levi Smith, who had a team-high five home runs, 58 RBI and a .667 slugging percentage, was named a second team catcher.
It’s been a big week for Smith, who also verbally committed to play college baseball for Stephen F. Austin University.
The THSBCA also recognized Cayuga’s dynamic duo of Jimmy Johnson and Jake Nash with second and third team selections, respectively.
Johnson earned a second team pitchers spot after going 12-2 with a 1.66 ERA for the Wildcats in 2012. Johnson struck out 107 batters in 55 innings, while also batting .567 with 7 HR and 46 RBI.
His battery-mate and future Vernon College teammate Jake Nash earned third team honors at catcher after batting .615 with 41 RBI and 15 doubles on the year. 2012 was Nash’s first year playing catcher.
