Palestine AD/head coach Booker Bowie retiring

A week after Palestine’s season came to an end, athletic director and head football coach Booker Bowie is retiring.
Palestine Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Thomas A. Wallis confirmed Thursday afternoon that Bowie has decided to retire. Friday will be Bowie's last day.
“Coach Bowie is a quality man who loves the kids here at Palestine,” Dr. Wallis said. “He taught them not only how to win but also how to be men.
“We wish him the best of luck and thank him for all his services at Palestine.”
Bowie told his coaching staff and some of his players of his decision Thursday morning. He will meet with the team as a whole on Friday.
Bowie spent two years as the Palestine head coach after nearly retiring a first time three years ago.
In his two years as head coach of Palestine, Bowie had a 9-12 record but did lead the Wildcats to the playoffs this year for the first time since 2006. Bowie was named the District 20-3A Coach of the Year.
“Coach Bowie is going out on top and there is no better way to go,” Dr. Wallis said. “He is going to be missed.”
Bowie spent most of the decade wearing maroon and white. He came to Palestine in 2002 as the defensive coordinator, a spot he held until he stepped down in 2006.
Bowie was going to retire after the 2006 school year, but instead came back to Palestine High School as an administrator.
After spending the 2007 football season not coaching for the first time in over 30 years, Bowie became the interim athletic director when Glen Tunstall was reassigned in November 2007.
Bowie was given the official title of athletic director in January 2008.
