Cayuga, Slocum and Elkhart win district cross country titles

Cayuga, Slocum and Elkhart cross country teams found success this week at their respective district meets.

All three schools qualified a team and individuals to their regional meets.

Cayuga

The Cayuga boys’ cross country team held off Itasca Wednesday to capture the District 19-A meet in Wortham.

Cayuga advances to the regional meet Nov. 7 in Humble.

The Wildcats had four runners place in the top 10 to get 30 points, one point ahead of Itasca.

Tyler Poole led the way for Cayuga finishing in fourth. Wesley Owens was fifth, Bryce Thorson was seventh and Bobby Sharp finished 10th. Jarrett Barnett took 11th, Wyatt Dean finished 17th and Johnny Richardson was 24th.

Cayuga also qualified two from its girls team — Kristin Bain finished sixth and Shelby Henry took eighth.

Cayuga’s Branden Walthall won the junior varsity boys division and Kaitlin Massey finished seventh in junior varsity girls.

Slocum

The Slocum boys cross country squad won the district championship Wednesday in Apple Springs to advance to regionals on Nov. 7 in Humble.

Slocum had three runners finish in the top 10, led by Logan Foster, who won the race with a time of 17-minutes, 50 seconds.

Caleb Edwards took fourth (19:20) and Michael Edwards was eighth (19:46). Kendell Redd finished 13th (20:26), Hunter Johnson was 15th (20:52), Nathan Edwards was 23rd (22:06) and Randall Thomason was 26th (23:07).

The Slocum girls also advances to regionals after taking third place.

The Lady Mustangs had three runners finish in the top 10 led by Kaylee Webb’s fifth-place finish with the time of 15:16. Heather Hoag took eighth (16:01) and Britni Haley was ninth (16:11). Anna Bishop took 13th (16:28) and Brice Sizemore was 22nd (19:02).

For the junior varsity boys, Jacob Bowman was second (21:53), Wade Mitchell was sixth (24:07) and Matt LaRue was 13th (29:30).

Elkhart

The Elkhart girls cross country team took second place at the district meet this week to qualify for regionals on Nov. 7 in Humble.

The Lady Elks had four runners place in the top 10, led by Amanda Ham’s fourth-place finish with a time of 13:23. Elise Davis was fifth (13:44), Tiffany Claborn was ninth (13:58) and Hope Upchurch was 10th (14:02). Madelon Hays finished 29th (15:52), Harley Brim was 30th (16:00) and Amanda Yates was 31st (16:28).

The Elkhart boys squad qualified two runners to regionals. Seth Lusk qualified after finishing eighth (18:38) and Bryant Angton heads to regionals after taking 10th (18:59).

Also for the Elkhart boys, Jon Michael Bennett was 18th (20:02), Lucas Boykin was 26th (21:00) and Matt Whitley was 27th (21:01).

For the junior varsity girls, Tracey Clewis was second (15:13) and Larami McAdams was seventh (16:04).

For the junior varsity boys, JD Ward was fourth (22:52), Justin Bing was fifth (25:20), Tyler Carr was sixth (25:47) and Jerad Bennett was seventh (26:46).

Palestine Junior Varsity

The Palestine junior varsity boys and girls squads took the district title Wednesday in Fairfield.

The boys team swept with 15 points as the Wildcats had the top 11 runners led by Nick Giles (19:02). Alfonso Hernandez (19:07), Edgar Ayala (19:08), Jacob Hernadnez (19:15), Eduardo Munoz (19:18), Hilton Hamon (19:23), Edgar Salinas (19:43), Jonathan Cruz (19:44), David Rayner (19:46), Juan Rangel (19:49) and Michael Yeakey (19:50) were second through 11th respectively.

Thirtenth through 20th for Palestine were Alejandro Sanchez (19:55), Francisco Ramirez (20:10), Marvin Arevalo (20:17), Guillermo Falcon (20:30), Kyle Ferris (20:56), Javier Avila (21:00), Travis Atkinson (21:07) and Alonzo Cruz (21:09).

The Palestine girls also won with 15 points as Shelby Cole won the race with a time of 15:08 and Nadia Guitz was second (15:15).

Xocitl Zavala was fourth (16:12) and Laura Ives was fifth (16:24). Elizabeth Sorely (17:30), Haley Abernathy (17:36), Lupe Desantiago (17:38) and Aracely Martinez (18:31) were 10th through 13th respectively. Brittany DeLeon was 17th (22:23).
