Westwood offense explodes over Bullard

The Westwood coaching staff knows the kind of weapons the Panther offense can put on the field.

Friday night, the rest of the Westwood faithful found out.

Westwood scored quickly and often against Bullard Friday night in the Panthers’ first win of the season, 47-21, at Panther Stadium.

“We know we have explosive playmakers and when you put the ball in their hands, they are going to make something happen,” Westwood offensive coordinator Roger Mays said.

Westwood has three scoring plays of over 50 yards as the Panthers racked up 588 yards of offense with the first team going out of the game early in the fourth quarter.

“I know we have guys who can make big plays,” Westwood quarterback Tevin Watson said. “I know if I get them the ball, they are going to go score.”

Domanick Turner got the high flying Westwood offense started when he went nearly untouched for a 80-yard touchdown run. The Panthers set up with two backs and after a fake to Cameron Shead, Turner took the ball, went through a gapping hole and down the middle of the field for the score.

It did not take long for Westwood to find the end zone again as Watson’s 41-yard pass to Turner set up first and goal. Watson did the rest with the keeper to give Westwood a 14-0 lead.

The next possession was all Watson as he had a 47-yard run to get the ball to the 1-yard line and scored on the keeper for the second straight time to give the Panthers a 20-0 lead.

After the quick scoring strikes for the first three scores, Westwood slowed it down for its next score, using six plays to find the end zone. Watson faked the handoff to Turner and then found Shead in the flats. Shead caught the short pass, split a pair of defenders and headed into the end zone for a 28-yard score to give Westwood a 27-0 halftime lead.

While the offense was scoring nearly at will in the first half, the defense forced a pair of turnovers, getting a fumble recovery in the first quarter and an interception by Turner to end the half.

“The defense stepped up when we needed it,” Westwood head coach Kevin Anderson said.

Bullard started the second half looking to get into the end zone, but the Westwood defense stopped quarterback Marquez Franklin on the 2-yard line, a yard short of the first down.

Westwood took over at the 2 and it took only one play to score as Watson found Nick Morrow over the middle of the field and Morrow broke a tackle and went 98 yards for the score.

Westwood finished off the game as Shead added another long touchdown run in the fourth quarter as he broke free for a 51-yard score and Tyler Dillon added a pair of field goals on kicks of 21 and 41 yards.
