Elkhart falls to Malakoff

MALAKOFF — The Elkhart Elks opened the season with a 33-15 loss to Malakoff Friday night.
The Elks had a 15-14 edge in the third quarter but the Tigers scored 12 straight points in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
Malakoff scored the first two touchdowns to take a 12-0 lead. Elkhart got on the scoreboard for the first time when Brandon White broke free for a 50-yard touchdown run.
Elkhart added a 45-yard field goal by Bryce Fillmore to cut the lead to 12-9 going into halftime.
The Elks took its only lead of the game when Cam Reeves connected with Lane Grant for a 14-yard touchdowns with 4:31 to play in the third quarter.
But before the quarter was over, Malakoff scored on a 56-yard touchdown to retake the lead and scored two more times in the fourth quarter.
As a team, Elkhart rushed for 134 yards and passed for 81 yards. The Elks also were hurt by four turnovers while Malakoff did not turn the ball over at all.
The win broke a 13-game losing streak for Malakoff and was the first win for head coach Jamie Driskell, who spent the last two years as the offensive coordinator at Palestine High School.
