The Cayuga volleyball team got a big confidence-boosting win Saturday, knocking off Class 3A No. 14 Carthage in a 3-0 (25-19, 28-26, 25-20) sweep.
Danielle Anderson led the sixth-ranked Ladycats with 15 kills. She also had three aces and two blocks. Shawnta Knox also added double-digit kills with 10.
Mary Davis had four kills, while Molly Griffey had three to go along with her team-high 28 assists.
Maci Poland had three aces, while Cory McCulloch had 11 digs and two aces of her own.
The Ladycats will try to again knock off a ranked 3A opponent Tuesday, when they travel to Van to take on the No. 11 Lady Vandals. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m.
Cayuga opens the playoffs either Friday or Saturday against the winner of the Abbott/Thrall bi-district match.
ELKHART MATCH SET
The Elkhart volleyball team will open the playoffs in Lufkin Tuesday, taking on Woodville, which finished third in District 20-2A.
The match will begin at 8 p.m. at Lufkin Middle School, following a bi-district match between Groveton (3rd in 19-2A) and Hemphill (2nd in 20-2A).
The winner of the match will take on Sabine in the area round. Sabine won District 18-2A.
In other 2A volleyball matchups, Westwood awaits the winner of the Troup/Tatum bi-district matchup. The Lady Panthers earned a bye into the area round by winning District 19-2A. That match will be played either Friday or Saturday.
In 1A action, Grapeland will take on Mumford in North Zulch at 6:30 tonight.
