A field of more than 215 runners and 38 teams didn’t faze the Palestine cross country team Friday in Van.
The Wildcats took home their third-straight meet title, winning for the first-time ever at Sky Ranch.
Tyler Barnard finished second overall in the meet, running the course in 16 minutes, 23 seconds.
Mason Munoz came in fifth overall in 16:59, followed by Denis Quincin (17:03) in sixth.
Rounding out the Palestine scoring five were Alec Meyers (13th) and Eduardo Munoz (19th).
On the girls’ side, the Ladycats finished 10th out of 38 teams, led by Nidia Umanzor’s 17th-place finish. Umanzor finished the course in 13:42.
Guadelpue Ibarra (37th), Danielle Harroff (43rd), Jessica Ibarra (103rd) and Andrea Ramos (109th) rounded out the Palestine scoring five at the meet.
The Wildcat junior varsity finished third out of 36 teams, led by Kenny Hiatt’s ninth-place finish, while the Ladycats junior varsity came in sixth thanks to top-10 finishes from Ally Gouras (fourth) and Karina Trejo (sixth).
EHS SWEEPS GRAPELAND MEET
Both the Elkhart girls and boys cross country teams captured the team titles at the Grapeland cross country meet Saturday.
The Lady Elks captured the second through sixth spots in the race en route to the meet title, led by Anna Clark’s second-place finish in 13 minutes, 38 seconds.
Following her were Kayla Johnson (3rd, 13:50), Joli Ballew (4th, 13:50), Paige Huff (5th, 13:54) and Harley Brim (6th, 13:55).
On the boys side, Blake Zabick and Tanner Tutt both finished in the top-10 to help the Elks to victory.
Zabick finished in 20:25, good for sixth place, while Tutt finished eighth in 20:28.
Following them to round out the Elkhart scoring five were Luis Banuelos (12th), Justin Bullard (19th) and Dillon Shaver (20th).
The Elkhart girls’ JV didn’t have enough runners to field a full team, but still captured three of the top-five spots.
Courtney Cheatham finished third, followed by Paige Fillmore and Tiffany Rosas, who finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
The Elks finished second on the boys JV side, led by Austin Stiers (eighth) and Casey Lane (ninth).
The Elks and Lady Elks travel to Neches Saturday.
H.S. VOLLEYBALL
CAYUGA 3, Trinidad 0
The eighth-ranked Cayuga volleyball team made easy work of Trinidad Saturday, never allowing more than four points in a game during a three-game sweep.
The Ladycats won the three games by a combined score of 75-8.
The win moved Cayuga to 17-8 overall and a perfect 3-0 in district play. The Ladycats return to action today when they host Dawson, with action beginning at 5 p.m.

H.S. Baseball: Elkhart's Smith stellar at all-star weekend
By all accounts, former Elkhart baseball standout Levi Smith had a stellar weekend.
The former Elks’ catcher spent it in Round Rock, participating in the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association (THSBCA) all-star weekend.
He played in the 1A-3A all-star Saturday, batting in the clean-up spot for his team. But, it was the show he put on Friday that probably turned the most heads. -
Tennis: Palestine-native Ybarra captures East Texas Open title
In terms of his tennis, the last year had been a rough one for Palestine-native Ryan Ybarra.
After transferring from Texas Tech to UT-Tyler, Ybarra had seen his season come to a rough end thanks to a foot injury, and led him to wonder about his future in the sport.

H.S. Football: 5 local players to play in Saturday's FCA bowl
The annual FCA “Heart of a Champion” Bowl in Tyler Saturday will have a decidedly local flavor to it.
Five local players were among the almost 100 chosen to play in the game, which honors the best high school seniors from a 25-county area in Northeast Texas. -

The first of the area’s Class of 2014 football recruits has made a commitment.
Palestine offensive lineman Brian Thlang committed to the University of Louisiana at Monroe on Wednesday, days after attending the Warhawks camp with teammate Ben Luckett.
Thlang said he was won over at the camp with the ULM coaching staff. -
H.S. Football: Area coaches react to UIL's new 90-minute rule
In an effort to combat injuries, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) approved a limit on how much full contact can be made weekly during high school and middle school football practices.
The UIL, which governs athletics in Texas, approved a measure limiting contact to 90 minutes per week at a meeting on Tuesday. But, full contact is deemed to be “game-speed tackling and blocking to the ground.” -
H.S. Football: TCU latest to offer Palestine's Jarrell Owens
Palestine star senior-to-be Jarrell Owens picked up his fourth college offer on Tuesday, his second from a BCS school.
TCU offered the Class of 2014 linebacker/defensive end, joining Texas Tech as the two Big 12 schools currently courting Owens. -
H.S. Baseball: Trio of locals named to THSBCA all-state teams
Three local players were named some the state’s best baseball players Monday by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association (THSBCA).
Elkhart teammates Levi Smith (catcher) and Jacob Cheatham (third base) were both named first team players on the Class 2A team, while Cayuga pitcher Chantz Holland was named a first teamer in Class 1A. -
