H.S. Basketball: Cayuga edges past Palestine at Fairfield tourney

FAIRFIELD — For the second-straight game, the second-ranked Cayuga boys’ basketball team got a victory. But, for the second-straight game, it could be described as anything but pretty.

The Wildcats edged Anderson County-rival Palestine, 61-56, in the second round of the Fairfield Eagle Invitational Friday. The win moved Cayuga on to face Robinson Friday night, but that game ended after press time.

Cayuga pulled away in the game in the second and third quarters, outscoring Palestine 34-28 in that time, then hanging on as Palestine attempted a comeback in the fourth.

Palestine moves on to face district-rival Mexia at 1:30 p.m. today in the Silver Bracket.

Preston Anderson led Cayuga with 15 points in the win, while Deon Shofner added 14 and Hunter Jenkins had 12.

Wesley Rigdon chipped in eight, while Keyshawn Jackson had five in the victory for Cayuga (2-1).

Shumauri Scott led a balanced attack for Palestine, who had six players score at least six points in the loss.

Scott finished with 12, while Gee Clark had 11 as the two Wildcats in double-figures.

Izien Isemede had eight while both Tony Butler and Ben Luckett had seven. Jarrell Owens had six for Palestine (3-6).

Cayuga plays La Vega at noon today to finish up what was changed to a round-robin final four, because La Vega and Robinson — who were scheduled to meet in the semfinals — are in the same district.

If Palestine beats Mexia today, they’ll play again at 7:30 p.m. in the fifth-place game, while a loss puts them in the seventh-place game at 6 p.m.

WESTWOOD 65, Buffalo 49

WESTWOOD 86, Canberra West 44

The Westwood boys’ basketball team swept its pair of games Friday to open up the Centerville tournament, landing the Panthers in today’s championship contest.

In their opener Friday, J.J. Turner had 17 points and Dra Ross had 14 to lead Westwood past Buffalo, 65-49.

The Panthers used stingy defense to outscore the Bison 17-6 in the second quarter, pulling away for good.

L.J. Hutchison and Josh Denby each had nine points in the win, while Jacobee Newton had seven and Chris Thompson six.

In their second game, the Panthers made quick work of Canberra West, a traveling team from Australia.

Westwood scored 20-or-more points in three of the game’s four quarters in a blowout, 86-44 win over the Magpies.

Turner had 26 points to lead the way in the blowout victory, while Damontrey House added 16 and Thompson 10.

Ross and Denby each had nine in the victory, which moved Westwood to 7-3 on the year. The Panthers will take on the winner of the Madisonville/Centerville semifinal in the championship game today at 6 p.m.

OAKWOOD 59, Rusk 50 (OT)

The final score didn’t reflect it, but the Oakwood boys’ basketball team won a thriller over Rusk to open Frankston’s Azalea Orthopedic Invitational Thursday.

The Panthers and Rusk went to overtime tied at 46 before Oakwood outscored the Eagles, 13-4, in the extra-frame for the some-what comfortable victory.

Eleventh-ranked Oakwood got 21 points from Jacquez Anderson to lead the way for the Panthers, while Shaquille Caldwell had 10 and Dominique Johnson eight.

John Venable had seven and both Bryson Randle and Damiyne Durham — making his season-debut — had five.

Caldwell had a huge game down low, grabbing a team-high 18 rebounds and blocking three shots in the victory.

Anderson just missed a double-double with nine rebounds, while Johnson pulled down seven and David Allen had seven.

Randle dished out a team-high nine assists in the victory, which moved the Panthers (1-1) on to face Malakoff in the semifinals Friday night. That game ended after press time, however.

If Oakwood won, the Panthers play in the championship game at 6:30 p.m. tonight. A loss drops them into the third-place game at 5 p.m.

By all accounts, former Elkhart baseball standout Levi Smith had a stellar weekend.
The former Elks’ catcher spent it in Round Rock, participating in the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association (THSBCA) all-star weekend.
He played in the 1A-3A all-star Saturday, batting in the clean-up spot for his team. But, it was the show he put on Friday that probably turned the most heads.

In terms of his tennis, the last year had been a rough one for Palestine-native Ryan Ybarra.
After transferring from Texas Tech to UT-Tyler, Ybarra had seen his season come to a rough end thanks to a foot injury, and led him to wonder about his future in the sport.

The annual FCA “Heart of a Champion” Bowl in Tyler Saturday will have a decidedly local flavor to it.
Five local players were among the almost 100 chosen to play in the game, which honors the best high school seniors from a 25-county area in Northeast Texas.

H.S. Football: Palestine OL Thlang commits to ULM
The first of the area’s Class of 2014 football recruits has made a commitment.
Palestine offensive lineman Brian Thlang committed to the University of Louisiana at Monroe on Wednesday, days after attending the Warhawks camp with teammate Ben Luckett.
Thlang said he was won over at the camp with the ULM coaching staff.

H.S. Football: Area coaches react to UIL's new 90-minute rule
In an effort to combat injuries, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) approved a limit on how much full contact can be made weekly during high school and middle school football practices.
The UIL, which governs athletics in Texas, approved a measure limiting contact to 90 minutes per week at a meeting on Tuesday. But, full contact is deemed to be “game-speed tackling and blocking to the ground.”

Palestine star senior-to-be Jarrell Owens picked up his fourth college offer on Tuesday, his second from a BCS school.
TCU offered the Class of 2014 linebacker/defensive end, joining Texas Tech as the two Big 12 schools currently courting Owens.

H.S. Baseball: Trio of locals named to THSBCA all-state teams
Three local players were named some the state’s best baseball players Monday by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association (THSBCA).
Elkhart teammates Levi Smith (catcher) and Jacob Cheatham (third base) were both named first team players on the Class 2A team, while Cayuga pitcher Chantz Holland was named a first teamer in Class 1A.
