Much like it did the 2012 district season, the Cayuga girls’ volleyball team dominated the District 14-A postseason honors released this week.
The Ladycats, who made their third-straight trip to the state tournament after concluding their fifth-straight unbeaten district season, captured five superlative awards.
Senior Shawnta Knox was named the district’s Most Valuable Player once again, while fellow senior Molly Griffey was named the district’s best setter.
Junior Danielle Anderson was named the league’s best hitter, and her classmate Cory McCulloch shared Defensive Player of the Year honors with Kerens’ Kayla Kilcrease.
After leading her team to state in her first year as a head coach, Cayuga coach Magen Humphreys was named the district’s Coach of the Year.
Kerens’ Brittany McClure was named the league’s best server, while Wortham’s Amber Libhard earned the title of best blocker. Wortham’s Kendle Rhodes was named Newcomer of the Year.
Maci Poland was the lone Ladycat named to the district’s first team, while Meagan Poland, Mary Davis and Reann Richards all earned second team nods.
Presley Luce, Jana Walthall and Kathleen Lackey earned honorable mention honors.
Cayuga placed a district-high nine on the academic all-district team, with Davis, Griffey, Knox, Luce, McCulloch, Richards, Walthall and both Maci and Meagan Poland all earning honors.
Cayuga dropped only one game during district play.
The Ladycats fell to Round Top-Carmine, 3-1, in the state semifinals last week in Garland. For her play during that match, Knox was named to the state tournament’s all-tournament team for Class 1A.
