PALESTINE —
Cayuga’s Don Holly is a state finalist for one of the most prestigious awards a high school athlete can receive.
Holly, a star linebacker and offensive lineman for the Wildcats, is one of 10 male finalists from Texas for the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award. Finalists (10 male and 10 female) were selected from 2,633 applicants state-wide.
According to the press release announcing the finalists, they “embody the Heisman spirit of hard work and dedication through their outstanding achievements in athletics, academics and community/school leadership.”
Holly has tallied 94 tackles so far this season for Cayuga (5-3, 2-1) and is garnering interest from schools like Texas State and Stephen F. Austin to play football at the next level.
A male and female winner from Texas will be announced Monday, with each winner going into a pool from which the 12 national finalists will be selected.
Each national finalist will receive gold medals and $2,000 awards for their high schools, and earn a trip to New York City for a ceremony Dec. 7, to be broadcast on ESPN.
There, two national winners will be crowned, with each receiving a trophy, a $500 gift certificate to Wendy’s and a $10,000 donation from Wendy’s to their high school.
