— The Grapeland girls’ golf team shaved 20 strokes off of its first round score in Friday’s second round at Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin, seemingly putting them in a prime spot to possibly overtake first-place Memphis.

But, Memphis cut its own score by 11 strokes to claim the gold with a two-day total of 685.

Grapeland finished with a 724 over the events two days, claiming second place for the second-straight year.

The Sandiettes finished 51 strokes ahead of third-place Gruver.

Jayde Westbrook carded a two-day 170 (89-81) to finish eighth-overall at the tournament, the highest Grapeland player on the leaderboard.

Amy Brown (175) and Shelby Frauenberger (181) finished 14th and 15th, respectively, while Justine Dancer (27th) and Kalee Walker (28th) rounded out Grapeland’s top-five.

Grapeland’s Cameron Boyd shot a two-day 157 (74-83) to claim fourth overall in the boys’ tournament at Lions.

RUN INTO SPRING RESULTS

Palestine High School’s Alec Meyers outpaced Daniel Mendoza by one second to take the top spot in last weekend’s “Run Into Spring” fun run, hosted by the Westwood girls’ athletic department.

Meyers finished the course in 20 minutes, 40 seconds for the top spot.

Jessica Jenkins (26:57) and Stephanie Docteur (26:58) also were only a second apart in the race for the female top spot.

Daphne Adkinson rounded out the top-five, while Gary Barnard, Jamie Myers, Carolyn Mackie, Hannah Bell and Mistive Ormand rounded out the top-10.
