H.S. Volleyball: Huge comeback puts Cayuga back into state tournament

For the third-straight season, the Cayuga volleyball team will represent Region II at the Class 1A state volleyball tournament.

To get there this year, it took a massive Ladycat comeback.

Cayuga spotted Blum a 2-0 lead in the two teams’ best-of-five match at Weatherford High School Saturday, before the sixth-ranked Ladycats stormed back to take the final three games and the spot in Garland.

In the end, Cayuga won, 3-2 (18-25, 24-26, 25-21, 25-16, 15-12).

Cayuga joins Wink (Region I), Jewett Leon (Region III) and Round-Top Carmine (Region IV) in the Class 1A field for the state tournament, which begins at 9 a.m. Friday with the first semifinal, followed by the second at 11 a.m.

The final is set for 9 a.m. Saturday. All matches are being played at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland.

Cayuga fell to Wink two years ago in their first state tournament appearance. In that same year, Wink fell to Round-Top Carmine in the title game.

Leon is making its first appearance in recent memory at the state tournament as a Class 1A team, but the Lady Cougars are no stranger to the  event.

Leon was a semifinalist at the Class 2A level each of the past two seasons, never making into the title match.

Matchups for the tournament will be revealed early this week.
