Area summer track team sends five to Games of Texas

Staff Reports

The Dogwood Relays track team, in its first year, qualified five athletes to run track in the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation’s Games of Texas.

The track meet will take place Thursday through Sunday at Alamo Stadium in San Antonio.

The Dogwood Relays team was started this year by Kendall Jordan and had nearly 20 participants from around Anderson County.

“I started up this summer track league to keep our young people off the streets and out of trouble during the summer,” Jordan said.

The Dogwood Relays team consists of Dekedrin Butler, Kenyon Jordan, Tyler Gray, Alexis Smith, Sheldon Watson, Marquis Clark, Fabian Clark, Jhamerick Milton, Jhamonte Milton, Mechak Williams, Booker Winn, Lacey Tillis, Treyvon Reeves, Wesley Bennett, Arion Sandifer, LaToya Barrett, Devin Venoy, Johnathan Simmons and Bricia Balderas.

The Dogwood Relays first ran in a meet in Dallas last month and did well in a meet that had 600 participants.

The team then went to the TAAF Region 6 meet in Tatum where the athletes qualified for the Games of Texas meet in San Antonio.

Despite going against bigger teams, the Dogwood Relays did well at the regional meet, taking first place and third place in the 10-under boys and girls. Also in the 10-under boys and girls division, the Dogwood Relays took first in the 200 and third and fourth in the 400.

In the girls 12-under division, they took first in the 100 and second in the 200. In the boys 8-under division, the Dogwood Relays took third in the 100.

Jordan is looking for sponsors who want to help send the five athletes to San Antonio. Anyone wanting to sponsor an athlete can call 903-922-2869 or 903-391-1623.

When the University Interscholastic League’s boys state basketball tournament starts Thursday, a pair of Dogwood Circle teams — Cayuga and Slocum — will be aiming for a state title.

And leading those two teams are a pair of coaches who have helped put their programs on the basketball map. Cayuga head coach Greg Jenkins and Slocum head coach Jay Bruce know each other from their teams playing one another and watching each other’s team. Each coach has a huge amount of respect for the other.
