  • H.S. Baseball Playoffs: Wild finish lifts Elkhart over Queen City

Everyone wants to make the game winning play, and fortunately for Elkhart senior right fielder Tyler Tutt, it was his chance to shine in the spotlight here Saturday.

With two on and two outs and the Elks leading Queen City 2-1 in the top of the seventh, Queen City’s Briley Barnwell sent a line drive single into right field, straight to Tutt.

  • H.S. Baseball Playoffs: Big 1st, 7th innings push Elks past Queen City

If the first and the seventh innings didn’t count, then the first game of Elkhart and Queen City’s regional semifinal series here at Driller Park Thursday would’ve been a wash.

Fortunately for the third-ranked Elks, the first and seventh do count.

  • H.S. Baseball Playoffs: Cayuga players not daunted by new challenges

The Cayuga baseball team didn’t get much time to celebrate its dramatic, walk-off win Friday against Overton, which propelled the fourth-ranked Wildcats into the regional semifinals.
In the ensuing celebration, Cayuga ace Jimmy Johnson hurt his foot. This week in practice, centerfielder Hunter Johnson hurt his wrist.
While this type of adversity isn’t ideal, it’s also not anything new to this group of players.

  • H.S. Baseball Playoffs: Cayuga exorcises last year's demons, sweeps Overton

There was a common refrain coming from the Cayuga dugout anytime any of the fourth-ranked Wildcats’ five seniors were at the plate.

“Be a senior,” either CHS athletic director Greg Jenkins or CHS coach Greg Branch would say.

It was a request that the four seniors who saw action here Friday seemed to take to heart.

  • H.S. Baseball Playoffs: Elks claim Game 1 against Crockett

Tyler Tutt went 2-3 with two RBI and Cam Reeves picked up his 13th win of the year as the Elkhart Elks topped the Bulldogs by a final score of 7-2 Friday night in Lufkin.

The Elks used a two-run third inning to open up a 3-0 lead on the Bulldogs. That was more than enough for Reeves. The senior righty struck out eight and gave up just two runs in seven innings pitched.
