PALESTINE —
The City of Palestine is teaming up with other groups in the community to make Christmas a little brighter for underprivileged children.
“We’re here to help the children of Palestine and Anderson County. We have 40 brand new bikes donated from Walmart and in addition are restoring 15 more bicycles to give out to children in the community,” Palestine Police Chief Robert Herbert said Wednesday.
Fourteen of the bicycles will be given to 14 of the more than 60 children currently under the supervision of Anderson County Child Protective Services, according to Anderson County Child Welfare Board member Joe Coleman.
A number of the bikes will be given to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3907 to present to pre-screened families with children.
“It’s a great way to give back to the community. It makes a huge impact on some kids and that’s what we want,” Palestine police officer Patsy Smith said.
Herbert said the remaining bicycles will be distributed as needed to other organizations that provide help to local families during the holidays.
Volunteer Jim Thornell is among the handful of people who will help restore the 15 used bicycles for the children.
“I’m retired and have nothing to do, so I enjoy fixing them up,” Thornell said.
