County awarded Oncor grants

PALESTINE — Anderson County recently was awarded three matching grants totaling $102,130 from Oncor’s City Matching Grant Program for installing energy efficient lighting and air cooling systems at the Anderson County Courthouse, Anderson County Jail and Juvenile Probation Office.

The City Matching Grant Program was created to help local governments save energy and money by implementing energy efficiency improvements.

The high efficiency equipment will save nearly 186,000 kilowatt-hours of energy annually, equal to providing electricity for 16 homes for one year, according to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency calculations.

“The grants from Oncor have allowed Anderson County to make great strides in our energy management and a great deal of credit goes to assistant auditor Angel Cook for her effort in preparing the grants,” Anderson County Judge Robert Johnston said. “We’re looking ahead to long-term efficiency and sustainability.”

Grants are awarded for up to 50 percent of the cost of energy efficiency project installations, up to a maximum of $50,000. Applications are judged on several criteria, including demonstrated financial need, the expected energy savings of the project and the speed with which it can be completed.

“Now more than ever, it’s vital our local governments have the resources they need to implement energy efficiency improvements in their facilities,” Oncor Area Manager Brenda Walker said. “This is exactly the type of energy-saving project the City Matching Grant Program was created to encourage.”

The City Matching Grant Program is provided by Oncor Electric Delivery Company LLC (Oncor) as part of its commitment to reduce energy consumption and demand.
