If you visited the Texas State Fair this year you may have recognized a photo of a Palestine landmark that took first place in the junior photography competition, ages 12 to 17.
While visiting Palestine during the Dogwood Trails Celebration in March earlier this year, Dylan Palmer and her parents, Mark and Julie Palmer of Keller, toured the Texas Theater.
Dylan and her mom took lots of photos around town that day. Dylan’s photo of the theater seemed a good candidate for the Junior Black and White, Architectural Features/Buildings Monuments competition.
Dylan was excited to make it into this particular competition as she just made it into the age bracket, turning 12, only three days before the start of the fair.
Her parents talked to her about the stiff competition in the photography category, but Dylan shined through — winning a blue ribbon or her entry.
Dylan is the granddaughter of former Palestine residents, Jerry and Marilyn Palmer, who now reside in The Woodlands. Her father, Mark Palmer, also is a former resident of Palestine and remembers going to the Texas Theater as a child.
Safe Sitter Class
In order to build better baby-sitters today and better parents in the future, Elkhart Middle School will hold a “Safe Sitter Class.”
The class will be offered for those ages 11 and up from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday Nov. 10 at the EMS library.
The class will include the business of baby-sitting, diapering producers, feeding, dealing with stranger knocks or telephone calls and more.
Cost is $30, which includes the baby-sitting safety handbook and certification card included. Please bring a sack lunch. Snacks will be provided.
Payment can be returned to the EMS office along with the name, phone number, grade and age of youth planning to take the class along with parent signature. Contact the school for sign-up information.
Veterans Day program
Southside Elementary School is inviting all veterans to a Veterans Day program at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 9 at the school.
All 520 of the second- and third-graders will be honoring the veterans with song. A reception will be held afterwards in the school library.
A Wall of Honor of all veterans, active or inactive, also will be displayed.
“So far we have 150 names for our wall and about 30 veterans that will be attending,” Southside Elementary School music teacher Elaine Hazel said. “All veterans are invited.”
