Anderson County man jailed after Tuesday night shooting

Two injured while repossessing suspect's vehicle

PALESTINE — Two persons were shot Tuesday night during the process of repossessing a vehicle outside an Anderson County residence.

Vic Crawford and Jennifer Miller suffered injuries believed to be non-life threatening while repossessing a "newer model" pickup truck from outside a residence on CR 109, according to Troy Black, chief deputy for the Anderson County Sheriff's Office.

Crawford suffered gunshot wounds to his shoulder and head, while Miller sustained a gunshot wound to her hip, according to the chief deputy.

Both gunshot victims were initially transported to Palestine Regional Medical Center before being transferred to a Tyler hospital by ground ambulance, Black added.

Doyle Henry Cook Jr., 64, was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following the incident, according to the chief deputy.

As of late Wednesday morning, Cook remained in the Anderson County Jail in lieu of bonds totaling $250,000 set by Anderson County Justice of the Peace Carl Davis, records indicated.

Around 10 p.m. Tuesday, Black said Crawford, who was operating a wrecker for Tyler-based Investor Recovery Services, and Miller, who was a passenger in the wrecker, traveled to a residence on CR 109 to repossess a truck.

"The wrecker was hooked up to the pickup and was driving away when Mr. Cook came out of the house and fired several shots (from a .45 caliber handgun) at the wrecker," Black said. "Mr. Cook then got in a vehicle and went after the wrecker. Mr. Cook passed the wrecker and then turned around in the road and blocked the road at the intersection of FM 319 and CR 103."

Cook then exited his vehicle and fired "numerous rounds" from an assault-type rifle at the wrecker as it was first stopped and then as it pulled around his vehicle at the intersection, according to Black.

Approximately 1/2 mile north of the intersection on FM 319, the wrecker "dropped the vehicle" (it was towing) and continued down the road, according to the chief deputy.

Anderson County sheriff's deputies found Cook at the location of repossessed pickup truck and took him into custody without incident, Black said.

Crawford and Miller, meanwhile, were located by authorities pulled to the side of Texas 294, approximately 1/2 mile east of FM 319, and transported to PRMC from that location, according to the chief deputy.

Anderson County sheriff's Sgt. Ronnie Foster is the case's lead investigator.
