Palestine winery Granny Muffin Wines recently was awarded two medals from the Florida State International Wine Competition.
Granny Muffin Wines entered two wines in the commercial wines division, Merlot and Petite Verdot. The Merlot won a gold medal, while the Petite Verdot won a bronze medal.
The 26th Annual Florida State Fair International Wine and Grape Juice Competition was held Feb. 9-11 at the Florida State Fair Grounds. The competition included both commercial and hobbyist divisions. The commercial division was open to all commercial wineries both in the United States and abroad.
Mike and April Johnston started Granny Muffin Wines in 2009. Using juices from the most famous wine regions of the U.S. and the world, the winery makes more than 40 variety of wines that range from dry whites like Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay, to dry reds such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
For the lovers of sweet wines, Granny Muffin Wines makes semi-sweet wines like White Zinfandel and Riesling and creates other wines that carefully move up the scale to dessert wines and ports.
April Johnston is also known as Granny Muffin.
“Granny Muffin is pictured on the front label of the wine bottles in a wholesome, granny-looking picture, and on the back of them she will be looking rather inebriated as if she’s been testing the wines repeatedly to insure consistency,” Johnston joked about her alter ego. Granny Muffin often makes appearances at local festivals and special events.
Granny Muffin Wines will host an Irish Spud Night at 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 15. Baked potatoes will be available for $7 per person, with all the toppings. Wine and drinks are not included.
“Granny is hoping to have some special nights, such as the Irish Spud Night, on occasion, to encourage the locals, as well as, tourists to experience an evening at Granny Muffin Wines,” April Johnston said.
Granny Muffin Wines is located in Texas Art Depot at 301 W. Oak St. in downtown Palestine. The Texas Art Depot carries art from most major artists and publishers. They also offer custom framing and a selection of gift items.
“Where else can you have a glass of wine and a nice enjoyable, relaxing time choosing a nice picture or art for your home with personal service,” April Johnston said.
The winery is opened Tuesday through Saturday and also hosts special events and is available for private parties. Wine is offered by the taste, glass, bottle or case.
