Those who are seeking to get their artistic juices flowing this year can look no further than the Palestine’s senior activity center where local art instructor Martha Reed holds acrylic painting classes each week.
The class meets from 1 to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays at the Palestine Senior Activity Center, 200 N. Church St.
“I can teach all levels from beginners who have no knowledge of painting to advanced,” Reed said. “I try to make sure the classes are fun. You can’t go wrong if you are having fun.”
Palestine native Reed has been teaching the class for more than five years, starting her classes originally at the old senior center on Kickapoo Street.
“I love to see people delighted that they can be creative. Many of my students started out not knowing anything about painting and are amazed to see they can learn to paint,” Reed said.
Each student paints at their own pace, Reed said.
Adults of all ages are invited to take the class. Cost is $5 per class.
Those interested in taking the class can purchase their own painting supplies or Reed can provide the supplies for an additional cost. Supplies include acrylic paint, brushes and other miscellaneous items.
“The student can purchase supplies as they go to keep the expenses down as much as possible,” Reed said.
Reed got her start in painting with decorative painting years ago.
“I drove to Tulsa to take classes from Priscilla Hauser, a well known instructor,” Reed said. “I took a lot of fine art classes too and have taken classes with other well-known professional teachers such as Beth Johnson and Jerry Yarnell.”
