Mother, daughter collect nativity sets

PALESTINE — After viewing a community nativity display in downtown Palestine several Christmases ago, Stacey Musick and her daughter Megan Musick were inspired to start a nativity collection of their own.

“Counting the ones on our Christmas tree, we have roughly 95 nativities now,” Megan, 23, of Palestine said. “We add at least one or two every year.”

Some of the nativities light up, some play music, some are snowglobes and others are ornaments. One is a box that when opened unfolds into a nativity. Each nativity scene shares a place in the hearts of the women who collect them.

“We have found them at garage sales, flea markets, Walmart, dollar stores, as well as getting them from my mom’s salon customers and friends,” Megan said.

For the women, collecting the nativities brings to life the meaning of the season.

“The nativity is why we celebrate this time of year and the meaning of Jesus Christ and the love God had for sending his Son,” Megan said. “I love collecting nativities with my mom. When we saw the community nativity display years ago, we enjoyed it. Right then and there, I knew I wanted to collect them.”

Her mother agrees.

“I enjoy collecting them because it reminds me of the beginning of Jesus’ journey on this earth, and I like to see the look on my girls’ (daughters Megan and Amber Musick) faces when I find ones that are different than the one’s we already have,” Stacey said.
