Local Mary Kay director earns her first career car

PALESTINE — For one local woman, the fruition of her hard work came with a set of keys and four wheels this week.

Mary Kay local director Mattie Jackson of Palestine picked up her 2013 white Chevrolet Cruze Monday at Bacon Chevrolet in Palestine – a reward for her achievements with the company.

Mary Kay founder Mary Kay Ash awarded the first career car in 1969. Since then, more than 130,000 independent sales force members worldwide have qualified for the use of a career car.

“It’s a big accomplishment. I’m happy — beyond happy,” Jackson said as she picked up the keys for her new car Monday while her Mary Kay team members cheered her on. “I know if I can do it, my team members can do it as well.”

For Jackson, teamwork is everything — and the key to her success.

“The secret is team building — telling other women about starting their own business and being independent,” Jackson said. “You can’t do it by yourself, it takes a team. Mary Kay teaches us to help others, which in the end helps us get what we want as well.”

Jackson started as an independent consultant with Mary Kay in December 2009. She debuted as a director in July 2012. She has about 15 members on her team — with some team members under other team members.

While Jackson was thrilled to get a career car from Mary Kay, she can’t wait until the day she earns the signature Mary Kay pearlized pink Cadillac.

“This car is the first one, the next step is a Chevy Equinox or a Toyota Camry. I want to skip the next step and go straight to the pink Cadillac,” Jackson said.

Jackson, 50, is a 1981 graduate of Palestine High School. She has worked at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice’s Michael Unit for 25 years as a correctional officer, currently serving as a sergeant.

“I love Mary Kay because I enjoy meeting new people and sharing the opportunity with the women I meet,” Jackson said. “That’s what Mary Kay asks us as business women to do — to pass it on.”

After picking up her new car, Jackson and a handful of her team members, including daughter Stephanie Yarbrough, Patricia Boley, DaWanda Lacy, Paulette Milton, Linda Blanton, Joyce Rogers and Glenda Anderson celebrated by eating dinner at El Toro Mexican Restaurant.
