PALESTINE —
The Palestine City Council and Westwood Independent School District will be welcoming new members, while the Palestine ISD board remained unchanged following Saturday’s local and city elections.
In the city council’s District 1 race, Will Brule defeated Ricky Minton by a 47-30 vote count, while John Tilley unseated incumbent Lisa Gilkey in the WISD’s Place 4 race by a 26-6 margin.
Dyna Tutt, meanwhile, maintained her Place 1 spot on the PISD board with 156 votes (57 percent of the total votes), while challenger Mitchell Jordan, who was seeking a spot on the board for the second straight year, finished with 116 votes (43 percent of the total votes).
In another area election, incumbent Randy McCoy defeated challenger Rhonda Brewer by a 37-22 count in the Place 5 race on the Elkhart City Council.
The 69-year-old Brule, who is retired, succeeds Adam Harding on the Palestine City Council.
Harding was appointed to the position two years ago but opted not to seek election.
On Saturday, Brule said he and his wife, Jeanie, have taken a strong interest in city government since moving to Palestine from Angleton five years ago. The pair have been virtual fixtures at council meetings for months.
“I’ve had the opportunity to serve the city as a volunteer in several ways,” Brule said following his election victory. “Then I was encouraged to run for office when Adam (Harding) decided not to seek election.
“We love Palestine,” he continued. “I have roots here all the way to the 1870s. I’m retired, so I have the time to give it. It does take some time to do it right.”
Brule said he brings “a strong planning and scheduling background” to the council.
“I believe I can benefit the council with those skills and my analytical skills,” he stated.

Remembering a fallen warrior: Native soldier shares importance of honoring veterans past and present
I grew up in and around Palestine, Texas. I spent every single one of my grammar-aged school years in attendance in the academic hallways of either the Westwood or Palestine independent school districts. By the time I was old enough to head out and enlist in the U.S. Army, I thought I knew pretty much everything that was worth knowing about my hometown and the beautiful East Texas county in which it is positioned.
