PALESTINE —
The award-winning Palestine High School Ovation Theatre company has done it once again, winning not only their eighth consecutive district One-Act Play championship, but also winning the Area competition that advanced them to Regional where they ended the One-act season as one of the top 24 theatre schools in the State 3-A division of 195 entries. The company presented “Sophocles’ Electra” adapted by Frank McGuinness for their entry in the One-Act Play competition. The play, about the revenge of a fathers’murder by his daughter and long lost son was modernized by the adapter from the ancient Greek text to become more like a modern television series, or movie.
The Ovation Theatre Company will present their final performances of “Sophocles’ Electra” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 18 and at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 19 at the Historic Texas Theatre in Downtown Palestine. Admission will be $2.
The cast and crew includes Seniors; Ronnie VanZant and Will Folmar, Juniors: Roxanne Davis, Adam Hobbs, Greg Albright, Caitlyn Morrow, Callie Flynn, and Amy Witt. Also Juniors: Caleb Lawson, Wyatt Marshall and Gabbi Dantin. Sophomore, Miriam Loers, and Sassinn Ounpiyodom, and Freshman: Haley Cook and Jordan Hobbs.

New mayor, others sworn in
Newly elected mayor Therrell Thomas took his new position on the Palestine City Council on Monday, being sworn in along with council members Steve Presley, Vernon Denmon and James Yelverton.
Thomas, who most recently held the District 5 seat on the council, defeated opponent Timothy Triplett, 471-432 votes, for the city’s top seat on May 11. -
