This holiday season, the Palestine Community Theatre has planned not only a Christmas show, but a Wine and Wassail Tour at a historic Palestine home.
PCT will present “A Christmas Carol,” adapted for the stage by Palestine native Gerry Don Goodwin, at the historic Texas Theater during a one-weekend-only performance this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Before the Friday and Saturday performances of “A Christmas Carol,” guests are invited to tour both floors of the historic home of PCT board members Michael and Amelia Cook for a Wine and Wassail Tour and pre-show fundraiser for the PCT. The Cook family recently finished an 18-month renovation on their 1898 colonial home, located on Cedar street, with local contractor Cesar Acevedo.
The Wine and Wassail Tour of the Cook’s historic home includes drinks, hors d’oeuvres and live music from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday before the curtains open at the theater. Pianist Kevin Guinn will be performing during the tour along with local vocalists Chaundra Dantin and Jared Cook.
Tickets are $25 and include tour of the home, meal, drinks and ticket to the show. The Wine and Wassail tickets are very limited and will be sold on a first come basis. Call Education Unlimited at 903-723-8383 for more information.
Goodwin has spent the last year crafting his adaptation of “A Christmas Carol.” Goodwin has performed in 12 productions at the local theater and is excited to bring his adaptation of this classic tale to the stage as the director.
His adaptation embraces Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” about Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly old man who believes that Christmas is just an excuse for people to miss work and for idle people to expect handouts. He doesn’t believe in all of the good cheer and charity that the season promotes, and he makes sure everyone knows it. Then one night, Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his former business associate, Jacob Marley — a man who was as greedy and cold as Scrooge is. Three ghosts visit Scrooge successively: the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present, and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. They show Scrooge his error in valuing money over people. Scrooge is frightened by the bleak picture of his life and promises to change his ways. He awakes on Christmas morning a new man and carries the spirit of Christmas with him all the year round.
“A Christmas Carol” is sponsored by Mary Alice Largent and Improving Palestine Downtown Neighborhood Association. The Wine and Wassail Tour is sponsored by Xi Alpha Gamma Lambda.
Tickets for “A Christmas Carol” are $12 each for adults and $8 for children.
