PALESTINE —
Despite the hot summer temperatures, Elkhart Elementary School student Lauren Simpson, 9, has been growing her hair extra long for a cause.
Lauren, daughter of Brian and Shelly Simpson, wanted to wait until her hair was long enough so when it was cut, she could donate her hair to Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis.
“She struggled through the heat of this summer because she wanted to make sure that it was plenty long enough,” her grandmother Phyllis Simpson said. “She has extremely thick hair and her desire was to help as many children as she could with her donation.”
Aaahhsome Salon and Day Spa hairstylist and co-owner Jamie Lipsey recently cut Lauren’s hair at the salon in Palestine, saving more than 10 inches of hair for Locks of Love.
“I am so proud of my granddaughter for caring enough to do this for these precious children,” Phyllis said. “I sure hope that it encourages other children to do the same. There is such a need for this and there are so many more children than ever having to take chemo.”
Lauren’s mom Shelly works at the Palestine Cancer Center, so she knows how hard cancer and other illnesses can be on families when medical hair loss occurs.
Lauren will be a fourth grader this year. She is the granddaughter of William Weaver of Elkhart, Brenda Weaver of Corsicana, and Virgil and Phyllis Simpson of Palestine.
