PALESTINE —
Palestine YMCA received a donation Friday from Hampton Inn & Suites for its annual fund-raising campaign, “We can make a difference,” in honor of recently named NFL MVP Adrian Peterson.
The donation of $2,097, matched dollar-to-yard Peterson’s yards in the 2012-13 season with the Minnesota Vikings.
Hotel owner Alex Patel and Devin Lackey, head of sales and marketing, presented the check to YMCA CEO David Hendricks last week.
“Devin and I were talking one day and said that we should donate a dollar for every yard Peterson runs,” Patel said. “I landed at the airport on Feb. 1 or 2, when they announced he was the winner. I called Devin and we decided to go ahead and do it.”
Patel said he felt the donation was a way to both honor Peterson and help the YMCA.
“I think this is the best thing to do,” he said. “As much as Adrian does to give back, we want to honor him by giving back as well — to do something that supports youth, athletics and the community.
“We hope to continue this every year.”
Hendricks was pleased about the donation and hoped that it would encourage other businesses to help the YMCA.
“This is great,” Hendricks said. “It is the perfect example of how businesses can give back to the community by supporting organizations like the YMCA.”
Last year, Hendricks said, the Palestine YMCA gave over $20,000 in assistance to local families for scholarships for memberships, childcare and youth sports.
