PALESTINE —
Law enforcement officials are still investigating the death of a local man, which led to the arrest of another after an evening altercation on Memorial Day.
According to Palestine Police, at approximately 10:30 p.m. Monday, officers were dispatched to the scene of a disturbance located at 518 North Sycamore St.
Upon arrival, officers located a black male lying face down in the driveway of the location. The male was later identified as 51-year-old Warren George Smith Jr. of Palestine.
Officers also located 49-year-old Alvin Eugene Hines, also a Palestine resident, at the scene. Officer Jason Lewis, the first to arrive on the scene, was able to detain Hines without further incident.
Hines and Smith were roommates in a garage apartment located behind the main house at 518 North Sycamore St., where they lived for the past six months. The two men had been roommates for several years.
According to reports, Hines and Smith engaged in an argument on Monday, which turned violent.
“Hines used a knife to cut Smith on the upper right arm,” Palestine Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. James Muniz said. “Smith was transported to the Palestine Regional Medical Center by ambulance and later died as a result of his injuries.”
After being taken into custody, Hines was transported to the Anderson County Jail where he was booked for the offense of murder.
Detective David Kassaw is the lead investigator on the case and is being assisted by detectives Tommy Thacker and Nathan Allen, both of the Palestine Police Department. Texas Ranger Rudy Flores also is assisting in the investigation.
No other arrests are expected at this time.
The victim was pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Carl Davis, who also ordered an autopsy.
