PALESTINE —
Carol Bentley’s Academy of Dance students won all first place trophies and awards in dance competition Monday and Tuesday at the Tremaine Dance Convention in Grapevine.
“I am very proud of the girls for the hard work of practicing and many long hours at the studio before competition,” Academy of Dance director Carol Bentley said.
Imani Pierson won first place with her tap solo to “Boogie Shoes.”
Winning first place in Junior Duet Trio were Hallie Calhoun, Julie Moseley and Savannah Gregory with their tap dance to “Rockin’ Robin.”
First place also went to the Junior Group Jailhouse Rock. The girls winning were Serena Coker, Hannah Cariker, Kennedy Hanson, Imani Pierson, Tori Stephens and Savannah Gregory.
The group At the Hop won first place in the Teen Group. Making up this group were Hannah Cariker, Devyn Rice, Imani Pierson, Vanessa Giron and Elyse Moseley.
Also attending but not competing were students Kaylea Ronniebaum, Karina Gutierrez and Elizabeth Orsak.
While at the convention, the girls took classes in ballet, tap, jazz, street dance, hip hop, contemporary, lyrical, fusion jazz and pop jazz.
“It was quite an honor for Hannah Cariker to be asked to demonstrate for Derrick Schrader in pop jazz and Imani Pierson to demonstrate on stage for the tap teacher Laurie Johnson in the Junior Room and for Devyn Rice and Vanessa Giron to demonstrate on stage for Laurie Johnson in the Senior Room,” Bentley said.
Tremaine Dance holds an audition for all the dancers — around 800 boys and girls. Kennedy Hanson, Imani Pierson and Hannah Cariker all made it past the ballet audition.

I spent every single one of my grammar-aged school years in attendance in the academic hallways of either the Westwood or Palestine independent school districts. By the time I was old enough to head out and enlist in the U.S. Army, I thought I knew pretty much everything that was worth knowing about my hometown and the beautiful East Texas county in which it is positioned.
