PALESTINE —
The City of Palestine’s Community Services Department is moving forward with plans to put in new playground equipment at Willie Myers Park, located on Dorrance Street.
The decision to proceed came after a discussion in which nearby residents decided which equipment they wanted at the park.
The last time new playground equipment was installed in Willie Myers Park was over 10 years ago.
“Throughout the City of Palestine parks system, every park needs upgrades,” City of Palestine Community Services Director Roy Crouch said. “Once we complete the splashground at Reagan Park, we will be ready to begin work on our next phase of park improvements; and the installation of new playground equipment at Willie Myers Park is that next phase.”
Crouch contacted different playground equipment manufacturers requesting rendering of park designs. Companies such as Kraftsman, Game Time, Miracle Recreation and Childs Play Inc. submitted renderings of park equipment and layouts to be voted on by the community.
The voting ceremony was held at Willie Myers Park where the renderings of the potential playground layouts were displayed for residents to view. Attendees of the ceremony also enjoyed free hot dogs, drinks and ice cream served by Bruce Barrett of Shep’s B-B-Q. After the votes were counted it was announced that a design by Childs Play Inc. won the bid.
The installation is scheduled for completion in late September. The equipment and installation will cost about $75,000, which is coming from left over funds of a previous community improvement program.
After the Reagan Park splashground and Willie Myers Park updates are completed, the City of Palestine will continue making improvements to community parks. Greens Park, where the disc golf course will be located, is next on the list for improvements.
Community Services has set up the Legacy in the Park program where contributions can be made to this non-profit fund. It is used to help the City of Palestine continue its mission of improving park and recreational areas for the community.
All donations are tax deductible and go solely to replacing and adding park amenities.
