PALESTINE —
Texas families have an opportunity to save money on back-to-school clothes and supplies this weekend — deemed the states’ annual Sales Tax Holiday taking place Friday through Saturday at retail stores everywhere.
As in previous years, legislation exempts most clothing and footwear priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. Backpacks under $100 and used by elementary and secondary students also are exempt.
The sales tax holiday weekend in Texas has been an annual event since 1999. Shoppers are expected to save an estimated $64.8 million in state and local sales taxes during the sales tax holiday.
In 2009, the Texas Legislature also expanded the tax-free list to include qualifying school supplies (if priced less than $100) such as crayons, glue, binders, lunch boxes, paper, markers, etc.
While the tax-free list of clothing items includes normal attire students would wear such as jeans, pants and trousers, jackets, coats, dresses, sweatshirts, shorts, shirts, shoes, socks, the tax-free list also includes items that many other shoppers in Texas (who don’t have students) can benefit from, including: diapers (baby and adult), baby clothes, swimsuits, pajamas, hosiery, work clothes and uniforms, etc.
Some of the items not covered in tax-free weekend, however, include accessories such as jewelry, handbags and purses, and even items such as football pants, golf gloves, helmets, etc.
Lists of tax-free items can be found at www.TexasTaxHoliday.org.
