PALESTINE —
A Wortham man remains in the Anderson County jail Tuesday after the burglary of a local storage facility and a subsequent attempt to evade officers during an incident Monday evening.
According to Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor, deputies received a call for a burglary in progress at Stor-Mor Storage, located on the 4200 block of U.S. 287 South at about 6:30 p.m. Monday.
“The owner of the facility spotted the suspect — 32-year-old Chad Donovan Baker — with a truck and trailer,” Taylor said. “When the suspect realized he’d been caught, he fled.”
Deputy Ronnie Howell pursued Baker south on U.S. 287, stopping him before he reached Elkhart.
“There were several stolen items loose on the trailer that were scattered along the road,” Taylor said. “Baker had cut the locks on three storage units and had taken household items like vacuums, a baby bed, etc.
“We recovered most of the property and there was some damage to the items that fell from the trailer,” he continued. “We also recovered a set of bolt cutters used to cut the locks.”
Baker was arrested for three counts of burglary of a habitation. No bond had been set as of Tuesday.
Storage units, especially those in rural locations with little or no security, are often a target for thieves, the sheriff said.
“They are an easy mark, because no one is there and all they have to do for access is cut an individual lock,” Taylor said. “Those facilities that require a security code are safer, but not 100 percent theft-proof.
“We are just glad to get another thief off the streets.”
