PALESTINE —
More than 150,000 troops are serving overseas and are away from their families.
Palestine Resource Center For Independent Living (PRCIL) and Cell Phones for Soldiers have united to call on all Americans to support those brave men and women by donating their unused cell phones.
The Cell Phones for Soldiers project wants to help keep troops connected with their families; their goal is to provide every U.S. soldier with a way to call home for free.
Phones donated to the program are sent to ReCellular and recycled for cash. ReCellular then pays Cell Phones for Soldiers enough for each donated phone to provide an hour of talk time for those soldiers serving in the Middle East.
Palestine and surrounding area residents can support the collection drive by dropping off phones from Monday through Thursday at PRCIL, located at 421 Ave. A. in Palestine. For more information, call PRCIL at 903-729-7505.
Dogwood Trails giveaway set
The City of Palestine and the Palestine Area Chamber of Commerce recently announced the start of Dogwood Trails “75 Days of Giveaways,” which began Thursday and continues through March 31.
An item a day will give away to anyone who shares statuses about the Dogwood Trails Celebration as presented on its Facebook page. The status, which details what is being given away, will be posted on the page at 10 a.m. every morning. It must be shared by 4 p.m. in order to be eligible to win the giveaway.
The winner will be selected at random and announced by 5 p.m. each day. Giveaways range from coffee mugs to hotel stays to diamonds.

St. Philip’s Chili Fiesta set Feb. 5
St. Philip’s Episcopal Church Women’s will host its 52nd annual Chili Fiesta will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at the church’s Parish Hall, located at the corner of East Crawford and Houston Streets.
The Chili Fiesta features the original St. Philip’s 1961 chili recipe and the $7 ticket price includes drinks and pie. Dine-in or take out is offered. For tickets or information, contact any member of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church Women or call the church office 903-729-4214.

According to Sheriff Greg Taylor, while on patrol in the early morning hours on Saturday, deputy Johnny Gorden saw a suspicious vehicle sitting on the side of U.S. 287 between Palestine and Elkhart. -
