PALESTINE —
A 27-year-old Elkhart man was charged with prohibited substance in a correctional facility after authorities say they found liquid PCP “secreted” in his clothes during the book-in process for a misdemeanor arrest.
Matthew Michael Moore, 27, of Elkhart was being booked into the Anderson County Jail early Thursday on the misdemeanor charge of public intoxication when officers discovered a vial of liquid PCP in his clothing, according to Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor.
Around 2:10 a.m. Thursday, Taylor said Anderson County sheriff’s Cpl. Gerald Kerr was patrolling in the 6000 block of U.S. 287, south of the Palestine city limits, when he observed a 2012 Dodge pickup “parked in the northbound lane headed south.
“When he (Kerr) approached, the driver was just sitting there,” Taylor said. “The vehicle was parked. He (Moore) was semi-unresponsive. He coaxed him out of the vehicle and he was very unstable on his feet.”
The driver, who was identified as Moore, was glassy-eyed, “sweating profusely,” and displaying slurred speech, according to the sheriff.
Taylor said Moore told the officer he had taken an Alprazolam tablet several hours earlier.
Alprazolam is an anti-anxiety medication which is traded under several brand names, including Xanax.
Moore was placed under arrest for public intoxication and transported to the Anderson County Jail, according to the sheriff.
During the book-in process at the jail, “They (jailers) found secreted in his clothing in a right front pocket a glass vial — brown in color — with a liquid substance which field tested positive for PCP,” Taylor said.
As of late Thursday afternoon, a bond had not been set on Moore’s charge, according to the sheriff.
“He was too intoxicated when the judge came this morning to see him,” Taylor noted.
