PALESTINE —
The Anderson County Blankets and Bears Children’s Fund will hold a blankets and bears drive in conjunction with the Palestine Community Theatre’s summer production of “Willy Wonka” at the Texas Theater in Palestine.
“We will be collecting new stuffed animals and blankets in the theater lobby starting the second night of opening weekend — July 21-22, July 27-29 and Aug. 3-5,” Blankets and Bears Children’s Fund Volunteer Vicki Brunton said.
The Blankets and Bears organization provides blankets and stuffed animals to children during times of loss, injury, grief and or trauma through various agencies including public safety officials, shelters, hospitals and certain not-for-profit organizations assisting children in their time of need.
“We are beginning to experience much larger need than we’ve known in the past,” Brunton said. “A lot more bears are going out in the community to children in emergency situations and as a result we have an increased need for supply.”
A Blankets and Bears collection and information booth will be manned by a volunteer on each night of the production from 6:45 p.m. until the start of the show around 7:30 p.m. on the weekend nights and from 1:30 to 2 p.m. on Sundays during the matinee performance.
“There are a lot of children in this production and because the drive will help local children, it seemed like a good place to highlight our mission and ask for support,” Brunton said.
“Willy Wonka” will open with a wine and cheese reception at 6:30 p.m. Friday, July 20. The show will continue July 21-22, July 27-29 and Aug. 3-5 with shows at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and at 2 p.m. on Sundays.
Tickets for the “Willy Wonka” show are $12 for adults for all performances and $8 for children ages 4 to 18. Tickets can be purchased in advance at Education Unlimited, 1917 Crockett Rd., 903-723-8383 or the Palestine Area Chamber of Commerce, 401 W. Main St., 903-729-6066.
