PALESTINE —
Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor was appointed to the board of directors of the Sheriffs’ Association of Texas this week at the organization’s annual conference in Dallas.
More than 1,500 persons attended the conference at the Hilton Anatole Hotel where they heard speakers, attended training sessions and had access to more than 240 exhibits showcasing some of the latest technology in law enforcement.
The 49-year-old Taylor, who has been Anderson County sheriff since 2005, was appointed to the board for the 2012-13 term by incoming President Daniel C. Law, sheriff of Caldwell County.
There are six officers and six board members who serve the organization.
Taylor was sworn onto the board Tuesday night at the sheriff’s conference.
The Sheriffs’ Association of Texas is one of the oldest law enforcement associations in the U.S., with the state’s sheriffs first meeting in August 1874 at the Navarro County Courthouse in Corsicana.
The Association began annual training conferences in 1878. Today’s conferences are the largest gathering of peace officers in Texas, with sheriffs, other county and local law enforcement officers, federal and state officers and major industry security personnel among those in attendance.
Taylor said the Association’s board of directors have many duties, including advocating the group’s positions in the state legislative process.
The board of directors meets four times annually.
