Anderson County sheriff’s authorities arrested a 25-year-old Tennessee Colony man dubbed as one of the county’s “Top Five” criminals Wednesday morning near the Neches River.
Coleton W. Gandy, 25, of Tennessee Colony was taken into custody around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday by a pair of Anderson County sheriff’s representatives near the end of CR 354 at Rocky Point near the Neches River, according to Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor.
Gandy was wanted on bond forfeitures on original charges of possession of a controlled substance between 1 and 4 grams and DWI-third or more, according to the sheriff.
Taylor said officers were “working on information” that Gandy might be at Rocky Point.
Troy Black, chief deputy for the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, and Anderson County Sgt. investigator Jay Russell approached the area in an unmarked patrol vehicle.
“Chief Black and Sgt. Russell found him hiding in a truck at the very end of Rocky Point (near the river),” Taylor said.
Gandy was scheduled to be on trial this week at the Anderson County Courthouse on the felony charge of felon in possession of a firearm.
When the defendant failed to show for a pre-trial hearing Monday, 349th State District Judge Pam Foster Fletcher issued a warrant for Gandy’s arrest, according to Anderson County District Attorney Doug Lowe.
Lowe said his office plans to present a case to the Anderson County grand jury against Gandy for felony bond jumping in the near future.
Back in early August, 17 representatives of multiple Anderson County law enforcement agencies participated in the so-called “Top Five Lunch” organized by Lowe. Patterned after similar efforts in other states, local lawmen discussed local crime issues during the get-together and were asked to rank their top five burglary suspects in Anderson County.
Gandy was among those with the dubious distinction of making the county’s “Top Five” list, Taylor told the Herald-Press Wednesday afternoon.
“He’s (Gandy) involved in the drug trade, he’s involved in stealing,” Taylor said. “You name it, he does it. He’s a meth user as well as a meth dealer...He’s a menace to our society, no question.”
