PALESTINE —
As a means to promote unity among Palestine residents, the Palestine Police Department will be hosting a centralized National Night Out event from 5:30 to 8 p.m. tonight at Reagan Park.
The family-friendly event includes music from local band Backseat Molly and a deejay. Face painting and other activities for children, more than 30 vendor booths, door prizes, food and refreshments are planned.
“This event help build bonds among people in neighborhoods and sends a message to criminals that these neighborhoods are getting organized and fighting back against criminal activity in Palestine,” PPD Community Relations Officer Patsy Smith said.
While National Night Out is a national annual event organized as neighborhood block parties for crime awareness, this year the police department decided to host a community-wide party.
Citizens from all communities in the city are encouraged to come together with their neighbors for the event to learn how to improve neighborhood ties and understand how to work with the police department in order to prevent and discourage crime.
“This event is not only informative,” Smith said, “but it is a fun time for the family.”
The new McGruff and Smokey the Bear will make their debut and a Medevac helicopter landing is planned. A drawing for a cross bow also will be held for $2 a ticket or six tickets for $10.
Families also can take advantage of the playground and splashpark at Reagan Park.
