PALESTINE —
Anderson County residents have until Oct. 9 to register and be eligible to vote in this fall’s general election.
The general election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 6, with the ballot featuring the presidential and other national, state and local races.
The Oct. 9 deadline applies to new voter registrants, in addition to name or address changes for existing voters, according to Casey Brown, elections administrator for Anderson County.
Anderson County has a pair of contested races in precinct 1 and another in precinct 2.
Precinct 1 voters will be electing a constable and commissioner.
In the constable’s race, Democrat Larry Bennett, who is seeking his sixth term, is being challenged by Republican Ronnie Foster, an investigator with the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office.
The precinct 1 commissioner’s race, meanwhile, has long-time incumbent Joe W. Chaffin, a Democrat, squaring off against Republican challenger Greg Chapin.
Precinct 2 voters will be electing a constable as Republican incumbent Doug Lightfoot faces Democrat Horace Poullard.
In the District 8 race for the Texas House, Byron Cook, R-Corsicana, meets Democrat Charles E. Morgan of Buffalo.
Anderson County voters will also be playing a role in U.S. Senate (Republican Ted Cruz and Democrat Paul Sadler of Henderson are the candidates) and U.S. House (Republican incumbent Jeb Hensarling and Democrat Linda S. Mrosko) races.
The early voting period for the general election begins Oct. 22 and runs through Nov. 2.
Registered voters are requested to bring their current voter registration certificate (yellow) to the polls for faster service.
Registered voters who have not received a new yellow certificate or need a replacement are asked to call 903-723-7855 or visit the Anderson County Elections Office in Suite 116 at the Anderson County Courthouse Annex at 703 N. Mallard St.
