Ghosts hunters visit to coincide with 'Haunt Queen Anne' event Saturday

PALESTINE — Sonshine Paranormal Investigators of Fort Worth will be visiting Palestine this weekend in conjunction with the Haunted Treats & Historic Open House Project Fund-raiser.

The Haunted Treats & Historic Open House Project Fund-raiser will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at 621 S. Micheaux St. as part of homeowner Jeremy Janz’s “Help Haunt Queen Anne — House of Nightmares” project.

During the open house event, the public is invited to tour the historic home and ask questions about the theatrical haunted house project. A handful of Palestine restaurants have donated food for the event including: Bishop’s Brisket House, Applebee’s, Giovanni’s, Cotton Patch Cafe and Shep’s Bar-B-Q.

The Sonshine Paranormal Investigators will have their equipment set up throughout the house for the investigation they plan to do after the event, but will be available to answer questions about paranormal investigations.

In the past, the group has performed investigations at the old Memorial Hospital and the Museum for East Texas Culture. The group plans to investigate the Palestine Community Theatre’s Texas Theater on Sept. 29.

“We are really excited about coming to investigate the house and later on to investigate the Texas Theater,” Sonshine Paranormal Investigator Clay Henderson said. “Usually, our investigations take three to four hours, depending on if we get any activity.”

Henderson said he will bring his laptop to show interested individuals some of the paranormal activity they found from their recent investigations in Palestine at the old hospital and museum.

Janz is holding the fund-raiser event Saturday to gauge the community’s interest toward his “Help Haunt Queen Anne: House of Nightmares” project, which he hopes to turn into a theatrical haunted house attraction in late October.

The project utilizes the help of volunteers, mostly from the Palestine Community Theatre, which he met during their last show.

“Our goal is to have fun preserving and restoring one of Palestine, Texas’s beautiful historic homes,” Janz said. “This 108-year-old Queen Anne style home is perfect for an exciting theatrical haunted house.”

Janz, who works in the nutraceuticals industry as a sales manager and contract manufacturing consultant for Matsun Nutrition, moved to Palestine from San Diego, Calif. nine months ago to the historic home located at 621 S. Micheaux St. at the corner of Micheaux and Angelina streets.

“We are really excited about having the Sonshine Paranormal Investigators out to our event Saturday,” Janz said. “I like the serious approach that the team plans to take with the investigation. Even if they don’t find anything in the house, it’s an unique opportunity and exciting.

“I just enjoy having fun with it and I think people have a curiosity about the possibility of paranormal activity.”

If the Haunted Queen Anne project gets a good response and donations from the community, Janz would plan to open the haunted house on the following days: Oct. 19-20, Oct. 25-28 and Oct. 30-31.

“I’m excited to have the community come to our house and share it with them and hear face-to-face about the project,” Janz said. “If we can raise the money or get enough support to pull off the haunted house that would be great, but if not, at least we will have had a great time.”

Janz’s Queen-Anne style home was built circa 1904. The home features 13 rooms, 14-foot ceilings, 38 windows and 26 doors.

“We have about 15 volunteers who will help out Saturday,” Janz said.

The public is invited to attend the fund-raiser and tour the home. Donations for the project will be accepted.
