PALESTINE —
BARC, The Humane Society is planning an event called BARCfest featuring agility demonstrations, mini dog races, a petting zoo, a juried art show for students and more on Oct. 6.
The BARCfest fund-raiser will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Anderson County Youth Livestock Pavilion and benefits BARC, The Humane Society. Formerly called the Critter Family Fun Day, the event has been renamed.
“While this is an important fund-raiser for The Humane Society, we decided to make some changes to the event, most importantly we wanted to make the event more affordable for families” BARCfest coordinator Pam Smith said. “So we have lowered the price to $2 per person. “We also have some other fun changes to the event. There will be a juried art show by Palestine Middle School students, and the theme of the art show as well as for BARCfest will be ‘Every Dog is a Super Hero.’”
As in past years, CM Streek Agility Training Center will put on a fast and furriest agility demonstration.
“Guy Mayberry from Dallas Dog & Disc Club will show off his high-flying frisbee dogs. Bill McFarlin and his dog Star from America’s Greatest Dog TV show will offer training tips and show off some of Star’s tricks,” Smith said. “We’ll have face painting, a petting zoo, a great raffle and BARC’s new dog groomer, Rachel Sharp, will be there with grooming tips and clipping nails.”
The public is welcome to bring their dogs as long as they are vaccinated, social and on a leash.
Don’t have a dog?
“The love of your life may be waiting for you. BARC shelter dogs will be at our event looking for loving homes,” Smith said.
Lee Loveless Photography will be doing fun costume photos. Picture you and your dog with big glasses and a Dr. Suess hat.
Mini dog races will be held with two categories, under 10 pounds and 11-20 pounds. Each team must consist of two people and a dog. One person will hold the dog at the start line and the other will call the dog to him/her at the finish line.
Also a new twist to the event, members of the Cars of Palestine and the Congo Truck Club will have their classic vehicles on display. Attendees will have a chance to vote for their favorite car or truck by dropping a dollar into that vehicle’s donation bucket. All donations go to BARC.
The concession stand will be selling barbecue sandwich lunches.
Want to put your hero’s picture on BARC’s Wall of Heroes during the event? Send in a picture of a pet or person that is your hero, along with a short message, and the picture and message will be posted at BARCfest. Please include at least a $25 donation for each hero payable to BARC, The Humane Society, P.O. Box 63, Palestine, Texas, 75802. If you want the photo returned, send a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Be sure to write your name on the back of the picture.
